It all started with a man called Daniel Maclise, showing a Halloween Party in Ireland 1832, so as you can see, it is a quite an old activity. The ancient Celts believed that the border between our world and the ‘’Otherworld’’ became thin on Samhain allowing spirits (harmless and harmful) to pass through. The family’s ancestors were honoured and invited home while harmful spirits were awarded off. They believed that to ward off harmful spirits they’d wear costumes and masks. The reason was to disguise themselves as a harmful spirit to avoid harm. In Scotland the spirits were impersonated by young men dressed in white with masked, veiled or blackened faces. It was also a time to take stock of food supplies and slaughter livestock for winter stores. The bones of slaughtered livestock were cast into its flames. And from there, people started trick-or-treat, specially children, disguised in costumes an masks, asking for candy or even sometimes money. Some of the countries where people celebrate Halloween are: Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, England, Japan and France.
